After smashing all expectations, the revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch has set a closing date. The production, which earned Neil Patrick Harris a Tony Award last year, will close in September.

Hedwig, which was written by John Cameron Mitchell with music and lyrics by Stephen Trask, continued to bring in crowds even after Harris left the show last summer thanks to a revolving door of stars in the lead role. Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall and Darren Criss all played the part. The last actor to play the role of Hedwig during this production was Taye Diggs, who was the first African American to take the part on Broadway.

The show’s plot follows Hedwig, an East German rock star who recounts her often painful life stories, including a botched sex change operation. As Broadway.com points out, some of the songs include “Tear Me Down,” “Wicked Little Town,” “THe Origin of Love” and “Wig in a Box.”

However, since Diggs took over in July, the box office has significantly slowed. The New York Times notes that it only grossed $400,000 during the week ending on Aug. 16.

Still, the show did recoup its budget in just 15 weeks. It was performed at the Belasco Theater and will finish with 22 previews and 506 regular shows.

Hedwig’s last show will be on Sept. 13. It will start a national tour in San Francisco on Oct. 4, 2016.
