Justin Bieber returned to the MTV Video Music Awards stage for the first time in five years on Sunday night, performing both his hit song “Where Are U Now” and debuting his new song “What Do You Mean?”

He kept his fans in the loop during rehearsals leading up to the performance on social media, and it looked like the extensive rehearsing paid off because he nailed his performance. He even ended it by flying up in the air while being attached to a harness.

But for whatever reason, Bieber got very emotional when he finished the performance and broke down into tears. He was left covering his face and breaking down crying as the camera panned back to the night’s host, Miley Cyrus.

Most of his fans took to Twitter to tell Bieber how “proud” they were of him, but there were some non-Beliebers who were freaked out by the tears.

“Justin Bieber fake crying at the end of his performance made me so uncomfortable,” one Twitter user wrote. Blogger @NaughtyButNotRob wrote, “He stopped crying the second the camera stopped rolling!”

His song "What Do You Mean?" officially became available directly after the performance.
