Kanye West, who certainly knows the power of music videos, will receive the 2015 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at this year’s Video Music Awards on Sunday.
The network announced the honor for the Yeezus rapper today. MTV praised West for his already iconic videos for “Jesus Walks,” the animated “Heartless” video and the recent “Bound 2” video.
West has also performed at the VMAs several times, with performances that bring to life his music videos and feature other exciting visuals. In 2013, he performed “Blood and Leaves,” sang “Otis” with Jay Z in 2011 and gave a theatrical performance of “Runaway” in 2010. He also performed in 2004, 2005 and 2007.
Other recipients of the Vanguard Award include Michael Jackson, Madonna, Peter Gabriel, Beastie Boys, Guns N’ Roses, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Beyonce Knowles.
The 2015 VMAs will be hosted by Miley Cyrus. The nominees for Video of the Year are Beyonce’s “7/11”; Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”; Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk”; Taylor Swift & Kendrick Lamar’s “Bad Blood”; and Lamar’s “Alright.”
