A series of movies based on video games like Assassin's Creed and Warcraft are headed to theaters very soon, and now another game will be getting the big screen treatment.
According to Variety, Lionsgate is developing a movie based Borderlands. It's described as a tentpole release from producers Avi and Ari Arad. Avi Arad is known for being the founder of Marvel Studios.
Lionsgate co-chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger said that Borderlands is part of a larger push on the studio's part to find established franchises that would make great films. Nothing about the plot of the movie has been reveleaed, but Lionsgate president Peter Levin promised it would retain the "in-your-face attitude" of the video games.
Gearbox president Randy Pitchford noted that they hope to make the first good movie based on a video game, adding that the Borderlands film will probably be rated R.
Borderlands is a first person shooter game set on the planet of Pandora, which was settled by mega corporations who quickly abandoned it after discovering dangerous alien inhabitants. The original game has sold more than 26 million copies and spawned two sequels.
Borderlands is yet another video game being turned into a movie, and there are a whole bunch currently in the works. Could one of these be the film to finally break the video game movie curse?
