Authorities said that a live hand grenade was found just outside a McDonald’s restaurant in Thurmont, Maryland, over the weekend.
According to the Frederick News-Post, the grenade was unearthed by a landscape crew just after 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. About 50 people at the McDonald’s were evacuated and bomb technicians were called to the scene to remove the device.
Bomb tech Dale Ednock said that the grenade was found lodged under the pavement and looked to be a relic from a military base previously located in Thrumont. He also emphasized that if the diggers would have hit the device they would have been dead.
"If the guy operating the shovel machine had hit it, he would have been killed, no question,” he said.
Around 3:00 p.m., the all clear was given for the fast-food and surrounding restaurants.
The grenade was taken to the Maryland fire marshal’s office will then be disposed of by the military.
Thurmont is located approximately 65 miles outside of Baltimore.
