While Star Wars and Disney’s own films grabbed the spotlight at D23 in Anaheim over the weekend, Marvel mostly flew under the radar. Attendees did get to see the first clip from Captain America: Civil War and there was some news about Doctor Strange, but that was it.
The Civil War trailer still hasn’t been released online yet, but based on Variety’s recap, it might as well have been a trailer for a new Avengers movie. We’ve known for awhile that Civil War might have the biggest Marvel cast outside of the Avengers movies and the trailer confirmed that.
One scene shows Cap’s new Avengers team from the end of Age of Ultron fighting Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and War Machine (Don Cheadle). “Are we still friends?” Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) asks. “Depends on how hard you hit me,” Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) responds. The battle also features Cap (Chris Evans), Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen).
Other characters spotted in other scenes in the trailer included Crossbones (Frank Grillo), Bucky (Sebastian Stan), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman). Spider-Man (Tom Holland) is supposed to be in the film, but Marvel declined to show the new Spidey.
Doctor Strange was represented by a concept art reel narrated by director Scott Derrickson. Star Benedict Cumberbatch couldn’t be there because of Hamlet, but he did record a video message.
Marvel chief Kevin Feige did confirm that Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor will be in Strange.
Civil War opens on May 6 and Strange hits theaters on Nov. 6, 2016.
