Michael Dees may just be the most famous singer you’ve never heard of. But thanks to his latest album, The Dream I Dreamed, that’s all about to change.
This jazz singer and songwriter has been in the music industry for nearly half a century. No doubt you’ve probably heard one of the hundreds of jingles he’s penned, sung, and produced for radio and television, or watched films like A Walk In The Rain, Day Of The Locust, and Sabrina whose soundtracks he’s recorded. And if you’ve ever wondered who was behind the singing voice of Frank Sinatra in HBO’s The Rat Pack, then you need not look further.
Michael Dees has a lifetime’s experience of singing other people’s songs, but few are familiar with his original work. The Dream I Dreamed features 14 new songs all written by Dees himself. Once you finish listening, it becomes immediately obvious that he is not only a great jazz vocalist, but an accomplished artist, too.
With his ultra-smooth vocals and incredible phrasing, Dees’ style harkens back to an age where the Great American Songbook set high standards for music. But that doesn’t mean you’re listening to “old people” music. Dees’ compositions are alive and current. There’s just no need for frivolous effects or boisterous showmanship. He simply takes the mic and delivers the lyrics, telling believable stories that listeners relate to.
Gentle ballads such as “Look At Me,” “A Kiss,” “I Miss You,” and “I’m Home” showcase his amazing poise and control, while a waltz like “A Long Time Comin’” oozes with passion and longing. The opening number “In A Moment” is an up tempo swinger reminiscent of Ol’ Blue Eyes himself. Other highlights (not to mention personal favorites) include “So Crazy For You” and “Back In New Orleans.” Both numbers evoke a Dixieland feel thanks to the sassy and catchy melodies that’ll make it difficult to stand still while listening to.
Dees entrances and entertains, but he does not do it alone. I’d be remiss if I didn’t tip my hat to the fine group of musicians backing him including Terry Trotter (piano), Chuck Berghofer (bass), Steve Schaeffer (drums) and guests Steve Huffsteter (trumpet and flugelhorn), Chuck Manning (tenor sax), Sal Marquez (trumpet), Bob Sheppard (tenor sax and clarinet), Doug Webb (tenor sax) and Don Williams (percussion).
With The Dream I Dreamed this seasoned vet has proven why he’s continued to thrive in the music world all these years. Just like wine, Michael Dees’ artistry only gets better with age.
