Mindy Kaling understands television and wants to let you know what is popular in the industry right now.

In a piece penned by Kaling for The New Yorker the writer/actress talks about being “seasoned” in the TV industry, and explains “the kinds of shows the networks seem to be clamoring for.” Kaling is a veteran in television. Not only does she write/executive produce/star in her own show, she also wrote for a little known show, The Office. Ever heard of it?

In the article Kaling says, “I’ve been in the television business for eleven years, long enough for people to start calling me ‘seasoned.’ Seasoned means a cross between ‘old,’ ‘disagreeable,’ and ‘only wears slacks.’” In the piece she goes on to describe a few common premises for series these days, including “boy-man must face the adult world,” “hot serial killer who’s kind of literary,” and “neurotic sensitive guy is also super-unhappy.” Do any of those sound familiar?

Kaling also talks about a type of show called “talkative chubster seeks husband,” which she describes as, “a sexually unapologetic fashionista who tries to find love in the big city.” She admits it “sounds like the premise of The Mindy Project."

In September, Kaling’s second book, Why Not Me? will be hitting shelves. The actress also will be starring in/writing/producing the fourth season of The Mindy Project on Hulu. Plus, this holiday season Kaling can be seen in the comedy, The Night Before.
