As a waitress, what’s worse than receiving no tip from a party of eight? Your customers mocking your service and laughing at their failure to tip.
This is all too familiar for Jess Jones of Belmar, New Jersey, who waited on the large party and received a “LOL” in the tip line on the restaurant-goers’ receipt of $112.
NJ Press reports they even indicated the reason they didn’t tip, writing "1 hour for food” next to the acronym.
"I was stunned by this receipt that was left for me by a party of eight people," Jones wrote on Facebook. "I would have preferred a '$0' tip than a 'LOL' tip, but as a waitress, bad tips and harsh notes are all part of the job.”
She added, “Even though they did wait an hour to eat, they remained satisfied with filled drinks and proper notice that the kitchen was a bit busier than normal. I've worked in the service industry for five years and I take pride in providing great service to my customers."
The incident has received a lot of reactions, even sparking attention from Belmar mayor Matt Doherty, who called it “ridiculous.”
“If you visit Belmar please treat the hardworking men and women in our service industry with the same respect you would expect at your job,” he wrote on Facebook.
Jones called the incident “cruel and unnecessary but sadly it's not uncommon.”
