While we still wait for what writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson plans on doing after last year’s Inherent Vice, he has surfaced as the director for Joanna Newsom’s new music video. Newsom starred in Inherent Vice providing that film’s narration.
The video for “Sapokanikan” follows Newsom as she wanders through New York City and signs along to the track. There’s plenty of long takes and sweeping camera moves, with light reflecting on Newsom. As Indiewire points out, it certainly looks like Anderson is using a hand-held camera.
“Sapokanikan” is the first single from Newsom’s new album, Divers, which will be available on Oct. 23 from Drag City.
Inherent Vice featured Newsom’s first role in a feature film. The movie, which also starred Joaquin Phoenix and Katherine Waterston, was nominated for two Oscars, including Best Adapted Screenplay. Anderson has not announced his next project yet, so in the meantime, watch “Sapokanikan.”
