A petition to get Jon Stewart to host one of the 2016 presidential debates is gaining traction, eclipsing over 150,000 signatures.
The Change.org petition was posted by Mariel Waters of Stanhope, New Jersey, who hopes that the Commission on Presidential Debates picks her fellow New Jersey native gets to moderate one of the debates. Change.org said that it is currently the fastest growing petition on the site.
Waters notes that Stewart has plenty of experience, since he has interviewed several politicians during his 16-year tenure on The Daily Show. She also cited a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll that showed 52.1 percent of respondents believe Stewart shares their view of the world on several issues.
She also noted that, during the last presidential election, an online petition to get a woman to moderate a debate was successful with over 180,000 signatures. She hopes her petition meets the same fate.
In an interview with NJ 101.5 on Wednesday (when the petition only had 1,500 signatures), Waters wouldn’t take credit for the idea. She said two 2012 Change.org petitions also called ofr Stewart to moderate a debate.
“I had stumbled upon these back in 2012 and made a Facebook page promoting one of them in an effort to support the cause. With Jon retiring from the Daily Show and a presidential election a little over a year away, I though this would be a great opportunity to get the ball rolling again on this great idea,” she said.
Stewart retired from The Daily Show earlier this month, on the exact same day of the first Republican 2016 debate. Waters told NJ 101.5 that she understands that Stewart will probably not want to do it, but she hopes he will see that some of his viewers still wish to hear his thoughts on politics.
“I understand that Mr. Stewart just retired and probably his only wish in this world is to spend time with his family on his animal sanctuary farm, but I hope that he sees this petition as an extension of our democracy, and that there is a serious demographic of people who still need his voice in our political process,” Waters said.
