The Boy Scout's motto is "be prepared." In following suit, Paramount wants audiences to ready themselves for yet-another zombie project, this fall's Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, with its first red-band trailer.
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones director Christopher Landon took a break from his Paranormal Activity sequel-penning streak to co-write and helm this bloody, raunchy action-comedy, centered on three childhood friends/teenage scouters who must team up with a badass cocktail waitress at the wake of the zombie apocalypse. Nothing that couldn't be gleamed from its title necessarily, but this first trailer isn't shy about advertising the practical effects, nudity and neon lights also in store for this October 30 release.
The teaser is cheeky, fast and dirty, if perhaps a little too revealing. While it's great to see practical effects used in such a wide-released horror flick again, this promotional tag runs the risk of ruining some of the upcoming movie's flashiest gags, as well as possibly some of its biggest jokes. It would've been more fun to see the zombie cats and delirious bloody head shots appears as a surprise in the final film, but such is the direction of the Hollywood advertising train these days. Hopefully there's enough up this one's sleeves to keep itself going beyond its moderately slim premise.
Written by Emi Mochizuki, Carrie Evans and Lona Williams, in addition to Landon, Scouts Guide to the Apocalypse stars Tye Sheridan (The Tree of Life), Halston Sage (Paper Towns), Patrick Schwarzenegger (Grown Ups 2), David Koechner, Logan Miller, Cloris Leachman, Sarah Durmont, and newcomer Joey Morgan. In a strange twist of fate, it's set to battle off the supposedly "final" Paranormal Activity sequel, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, just one week after its release. We'll see who ends up more equipped for the Halloween box office.
