Elle Fanning has taken on the difficult role of playing a teenager transitioning to another gender in the movie About Ray.

Originally called Three Generations, the transgender drama will be directed by Daby Dellal.

Elle Fanning plays Ramona or Ray, the troubled teen who makes the life-changing decision to change genders and become a male.

Naomi Watts plays her supportive mother and Susan Sarandon plays her grandmother.

About Ray tells the story of how Ray’s family must learn to support Ray and realize that Ray is and will always be a boy. “There is no Ramona anymore, its just Ray,” says Watts in the trailer.

Although this film will hopefully make people more aware about the transgender community, Entertainment Tonight reports that some people are disappointed that a non-transgender actress is portraying a trans character.

The film will come to theaters Sept. 18 and hopefully the controversy around casting Fanning will not take away from the important lessons that this movie will teach.
