This week’s column talks about a unique amalgamation of movie genres such as drama, romance, history and comedy. By the Sea follows a married couple’s ups and downs in France during the mid-1970s. Stonewall is based on the true story of the 1969 Stonewall riots, which brought the issue of gay rights to the forefront in New York City. Finally, Zoolander 2 has Derek and Hansel modeling again, but an opposing agency tries to take them out of the business. All three movies have tremendously talented and beloved celebrities in their casts, some going behind the camera as well as being in front of it. Plus, two of these films deal with raw, very personal emotions, one in a fictional sense and once based on true events. In addition, one of the films is a long-awaited sequel to a much loved comedy that fans of the original will certainly clamor to see on its opening day.
By the Sea is a romantic drama that stars Angelia Jolie-Pitt and Brad Pitt. Jolie-Pitt also wrote and directed the film. Set in France in the mid-1970s, Jolie and Pitt play a married couple, who has begun to grow apart. Yet, when they decide to stay in a sleepy seaside town and get to know its colorful citizens, they learn new things about themselves and their marriage. The movie’s trailer illustrates how the couple’s marriage and closeness has begun to deteriorate and the painful times they go through. It opens in theaters on Friday, November 13.
Stonewall is a historical drama based on the true events surrounding the 1969 Stonewall riots, which jump started the issue of gay rights in New York City. Directed by Roland Emmerich, it stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Ramona and Beezus’ Joey King and Ron Perlman. The motion picture is a coming of age story that follows a young man, who runs off to New York City, has a political awakening and becomes embroiled in the life-changing riots. The film’s trailer shows a homosexual young man goes to New York City, meets other homosexuals and becomes entangled in homosexual culture and the fight for gay rights in the city that never sleeps. It opens in theaters on Friday, September 25.
Zoolander 2 is the sequel to the smash 2001 comedy. Directed by and starring again is Ben Stiller along with his real-life wife Christine Taylor, Will Ferrell and Owen Wilson. New additions to the cast include Olivia Munn, Kristen Wiig, Penélope Cruz and Billy Zane. This time around, Derek and Hansel (Stiller and Wilson, respectively) are modeling again, but an opposing agency wants to take them out the business for good. The flick’s teaser trailer displays that Derek is just as dull-witted and hilarious as he was in the original. It opens in theaters on Friday, February 12, 2016.
