The 2012 action film Dredd became something of a cult classic, and for fans hoping for another installment, the co-creator of the character says a new movie will definitely be made at some point.

John Wagner, comic book writer who created the original character, posted on his Facebook page (via Den of Geek) that another movie is inevitable.

Wagner writes, "There will be a new Dredd film. It’s just a question of when."

The only question, then, is if there could be a proper sequel to 2012's Dredd, or if a new movie would just be another remake. The 2012 film was a huge bomb, grossing only $13 million domestically on a $50 million budget, so naturally it's been difficult to muster up studio enthusiasm for a followup.

Director of that movie Alex Garland said earlier this year that there probably wouldn't be a proper Dredd 2 anytime soon.

"But if there is going to be a sequel, it's not going to be me and the team of people who worked on the previous film, it's going to be another bunch of people," Garland said. "And good luck to them, and I hope it happens. I really do. I hope they do a better job than we did."

That's definitely disappointing, but for hardcore fans of the Dredd character, it's still exciting to hear Wagner's recent comments and the idea the Dredd's return will definitely happen one day. Let's just hope it can be more like the 2012 version than the 1995 Stallone one.
