Adam Sandler might want to retire from appearing in front of the camera, because audiences only want to hear his voice. Sony’s sequel to Hotel Transylvania did even better than its predecessor, even breaking the September opening weekend record.
Nancy Meyers’ The Intern (reviewed here), with Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, came in second with $18.2 million. That’s a bit behind the opening for Meyers’ previous film, 2009’s It’s Complicated, which opened to $22.1 million.
Last week’s No. 1, The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, fell to third with just $14 million. It did beat out Universal’s Everest, which disappointed with just $13 million in its first weekend of wide release.
Johnny Depp’s Black Mass dropped by just under 50 percent to $11.5 million in its second week.
The highlight of the limited releases was Sicario with Emily Blunt, which made $1.7 million in its second weekend. The film goes wide this upcoming weekend. Eli Roth’s horror movie The Green Inferno made $3.49 million.
