Could Bruno Mars be returning to the Super Bowl stage?
The pop star has been offered the headlining spot for the Super Bowl 50 halftime show, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Mars previously headlined the Super Bowl halftime show only two years ago in 2014. He performed with special guests the Red Hot Chili Peppers and drew in the highest viewership ever — at the time — for the halftime show. Last year, however, Katy Perry topped Mars' audience of 115 million viewers with 121 million viewers, according to Billboard.
The announcement was unexpected as Mars hasn't released new music since the last time he hit the Super Bowl stage, sans for his mega-hit collaboration with Mark Ronson, "Uptown Funk."
Earlier this year, several sources, including The Huffington Post and VH1, speculated that Britney Spears would be the headliner for the golden anniversary of the Super Bowl. Rumors swirled that the "Toxic" singer was planning to headline the halftime show after being featured in a commercial during last year's event. She also attended the ESPY Awards this year, where she presented the award for Best Female Athlete to Ronda Rousey.
Also, Spears is expected to extend her Las Vegas residency show into 2016. Fans speculated that she would use the Super Bowl to promote the show, just like Beyoncé did in 2013 with The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour. Angry fans took to Twitter to express their outrage.
