While it’s far too early to consider the Oscars, it’s going to be hard to avoid talking about them with Carol, the new film from Todd Haynes that has been earning rave reviews at film festivals already. The Weinstein Company just released a beautiful new U.S. trailer for the film.

Carol is based on a story by Patricia Highsmith, the novelist behind Strangers on a Train and The Talented Mr. Ripley. Cate Blanchett stars as the title character, a housewife who has a daughter. One day during the Christmas season, she spots Therese, a shopgirl played by Rooney Mara. The two fall in love and the romance weighs heavily on Carol’s home life.

The rest of the cast includes Kyle Chandler, Sarah Paulson, Carrie Brownstein, Jake Lacey and Corey Michael Smith.

Carol, which earned the Best Actress prize at Cannes for Mara’s performance, begins its limited release on Nov. 20. You can check out the international teaser here.
