Donald Glover, or as the music community knows him, Childish Gambino, was a guest on Conan last night to promote his upcoming movie The Martian and to talk about his move from writing sketches for 30 Rock with Tina Fey and starring in Community to a career in rap and hip-hop.
When Conan asked about where his head was at when he left Community the Because The Internet rapper says that the shift was probably a “bad decision” at the time.
“I didn’t think it was a big deal, I really didn’t,” said Glover. “Like my mom was kind of just like…’You have a good job, like why would you do that?’ ”
Glover left without looking back, because as he put it, ‘I like music,” but not without understanding the risks associated with trying to ‘make it’ in the music industry.
“I think it was a bad decision, but I didn’t know it. So it worked out great.”
After unveiling a new track at Bonnaroo this year all roads point to a new album on the horizon, one with a more experimental, orchestral direction that Childish has not yet attempted.
