Meryl Streep will not back down when it comes to fighting for equal rights for women.
Over Labor Day weekend Meryl Streep attended the Telluride Film Festival held in Telluride, Colorado. Following a screening of her film Suffragatte, the Oscar winning actress spoke at a panel, and urged Pope Francis to address inequality.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Streep reached out to Congress and received an apathetic response. “I sent them each a book called Equal Means Equal by Jessica Neuwirth. It’s about the revival of the attempt to get an ERA that would codify in law that you can’t discriminate against women. I got five answers,” Streep said.
Streep also brought the pope into the conversation. She praised Pope Francis on his acknowledgement and words about global warming, as well has his work on behalf of the poor. She called him “amazing,” but said, “He must address issues of inequality. The conversation changes when women are at the table.”
Suffragette is a film about the British women’s suffrage movement. It will be released in theaters on October 23, 2015.
