The Chicago Cubs have clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2008.
The Cubs are guaranteed an NL wild-card spot after the San Francisco Giants lost to the Oakland A’s 5-4 Friday night, reported the US News.
Outside Wrigley Field, fans could be seen celebrating and taking pictures, as the stadium sign lit up with “Cubs Clinch Postseason Berth.”
In qualifying for the playoffs, the Cubs capped off a historic season that saw many team records broken, including Kris Bryant breaking the Cubs’ rookie home run record, a record that had stood since 1961, having been set by Hall of Famer Billy Williams.
Bryant also set the Cubs’ rookie RBI record earlier this month, proving to be one of the best rookies from the 2015 class.
The Cubs’ impressive season also saw ace pitcher Jake Arrieta throw the team’s 14th no-hitter in franchise history, and the first since Carlos Zambrano threw one in 2008, via CBS Sports.
The Cubs had a chance to clinch their playoff berth earlier Friday, but fell short against the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2.
With the Giants’ loss, however, the Cubs clinched at least an NL wild-card spot with eight games remaining in the season, via ESPN.
The Cubs haven’t won a playoff game since the 2003 NL Championship, having been swept in 2007 and 2008 in the NL Division Series. The Cubs also haven’t won the World Series since 1908, when the Ottoman Empire was still a world power.
However, if Back to the Future II is of indication, then perhaps this is the Cubs year.
In the iconic film, Marty McFly time travels from 1985 to 2015 and is astonished to find out that the Cubs had won the World Series.
With the way that the Cubs’ season have gone, winning the 2015 World Series is certainly a possibility.
Jake Arrieta celebrated the team’s postseason berth on Twitter.
