Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced his support for a new gun policy plan that would allow for nationwide concealed carry permits on Friday.

The plan would essentially cause gun permits to function like drivers licenses making them valid across all states.

According to a report by The Guardian Trump’s plan, which is based of an experimental program from the 90’s called Project Exile, would also argue against the expansion of background checks for gun owners and includes mandatory minimum prison sentences for violent crimes

While Trump and other supporters of Project Exile such as the NRA claim it was a success, it has been highly criticized by advocacy groups such Families Against Mandatory Minimums and the Obama administration. Research conducted regarding the program’s effectiveness has offered differing opinions on its overall impact.

Moreover, the Washington Post reported that also included in Trumps policy paper was a call to end the elimination of gun and magazine bans calling them a “complete failure.”

Furthermore, his plan would include a five-year minimum prison sentence for any person possessing a firearm illegally and the expansion of mental health care though details on his plan for expansion are minimal.
