Despite a ruling from the Supreme Court that she must approve marriage licenses for same-sex couples, Kim Davis of Roan County, Kentucky has continued to refuse to do so.
Davis has refused to approve any same-sex couple’s marriage license since June, when the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. Even after Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear ordered all county clerks to issue marriage licenses to every couple, she continued to refuse to do so on religious grounds.
A federal court refused to allow her to not issue the licenses. According to The New York Times, her lawyers wrote to Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan, but the Supreme Court did not intervene on Monday. Therefore, Davis had no legal reason to continue denying same-sex couples licenses.
But this morning, Davis continued to refuse to grant same-sex marriage licenses, sparking confrontations with same-sex couples. WKYT posted several photos and videos of Davis turning couples away.
As NBC News notes, she told David Moore, who was hoping to get a license to marry David Ermond, that she was denying their request on “God’s authority.”
“I’m not being disrespectful of you,” she told Moore.
“You absolutely are,” Moore replied. “You’re treating us like second-class citizens, is what you’re doing.”
