Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who has continued to refuse to issue same-sex marriage licences despite a ruling from the Supreme Court forcing her to do so, is again trying to get legal support. She’s been unsuccessful so far, but she does have support from former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.
As previously reported, the Supreme Court declined to overturn a ruling from a federal judge that ordered Davis to begin issuing licenses to same-sex couples on Monday in Rowan County. But on Tuesday, couples seeking the licenses were turned away because Davis continued insisting that she was denying their requests on “God’s authority.”
NBC News reports that lawyers for Davis, a born-again Apostolic Christian, have filed another request to the same federal judge that told her to start issuing licenses. She’s hoping for a way out of that, but it seems unlikely.
A hearing is scheduled for Thursday, in which a judge will determine if she is in contempt of court by violating the orders.
Meanwhile, The Washington Post reports that Huckabee, who is running for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, said he called Davis and supported her efforts.
“I spoke with Kim Davis this morning to offer my prayers and support,” Huckabee said Wednesday. “I let her know how proud I am of her for not abandoning her religious convictions and standing strong for religious liberty. She is showing more courage and humility than just about any federal office holder in Washington.”
