Paramount has decided to push back the release date for Star Trek Beyond, the third film in J.J. Abrams’ rebooted Trek universe and the franchise’s 13th film overall.
The film was originally scheduled for July 8, 2016. If the film stuck with that date, it would have gone up against the Fox Zac Efron comedy Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates and Universal’s animated film The Secret Life of Pets.
Instead, Paramount has decided to put it on a collision course with Ice Age. Beyond has been pushed to July 22, the same weekend Fox’s Ice Age: Collision Course opens. Warner Bros.’ King Arthur with Charlie Hunnam also hits theaters that weekend.
Beyond will also have to face Sony’s Ghostbusters reboot, which opens the weekend before on July 15. That weekend also sees the openings of La La Land with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone and EuropaCorp’s The Lake thriller.
The new Trek film hits theaters as the franchise celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first episode of Star Trek: The Original Series. Justin Lin, who helmed three Fast & Furious movies, has replaced Abrams as director.
In addition to Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana returning, Idris Elba has joined the series as the villain. It’s going to be the first Trek release since Leonard Nimoy’s death.
