Authorities in Arizona arrested the man they believe is responsible for a series of shootings along a Phoenix highway over past few weeks.
CNN noted that on Friday police apprehended Leslie Allen Merritt Jr. and charged him with a slew of felonies including drive-by shooting, intentional acts of terrorism, aggravated assault, criminal damage, endangerment and discharging a firearm within city limits.
When Merritt appeared in front of a judge on Saturday though, he said that he was not the person behind the shootings.
"All I have to say is I'm the wrong guy," the 21-year-old said. "I tried to tell the detectives that. My gun's been in the pawn shop for the last two months. I haven't even had access to a weapon."
The Associated Press reported that despite that statement to the judge, investigators have done testing which proves otherwise and shows that his gun was not in a shop at the time some of the shootings took place.
As we previously reported, the random shootings began on Aug. 29 and targeted vehicles traveling on Interstate 10 in the downtown Phoenix area. No one was killed in the shootings, but a 13-year-old girl was hurt by shattered glass.
