Delta State University was put on lockdown Monday morning following reports of an active shooter, who gunned down a history professor inside the school.
Reuters noted that Bolivar County Coroner confirmed that Prof. Ethan Schmidt was fatally shot at the university located in Cleveland, Mississippi around 10:30 a.m. local time.
FoxNews reported that Warren Strain, spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, said that the shooter is not thought to still be on campus. However, he did not say whether or not authorities know where the suspect is or if that person is in custody at this time.
The school remained on lockdown Monday afternoon.
"Fortunately for us, our public safety officers and university officials have trained many of us for active shooter situations," Don Allan Mitchell, an English professor, wrote in a Facebook message to The Associated Press. "Many students are locked-down in classrooms, and professors and staff members are telling them the protocol. Plus, we are all texting and Facebooking each other to make sure we are safe."
The school alerted students at 10:45 a.m. that a shooter has been spotted near Jobe Hall.
DSU was founded in 1924 and has more than 3,000 students currently enrolled and just over 100 faculty members.
