Following its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, Sony Pictures Classics has released the trailer for Truth. The film stars Robert Redford as Dan Rather and Cate Blanchett as 60 Minutes II producer Mary Mapes.

Truth, which PSC picked up at Cannes, is based on Mapes’ memoir Truth and Duty: The Press, The President and the Privilege of Power, which is about the infamous report that called President George W. Bush’s war record into question. The report’s validity was itself questioned and ruined the careers of both Mapes and Rather.

The film was written and directed by James Vanderbilt, whose writing credits also include Zodiac and The Amazing Spider-Man. Vanderbilt told Yahoo! Movies that Rather approved or Redford playing him in the film. Of course, Redford famously played another journalist, Bob Woodward, in All The President’s Men.

“Cast an icon to play an icon,” Vanderbilt said. “These guys are so indelible, I didn’t want to do prosthetics or heavy makeup. Redford just greyed his hair, did a little vocally to get that Texas twang, and then just played the character.”

Truth hits limited theaters on Oct. 16. The film also stars Topher Grace, Elisabeth Moss and Dennis Quaid.
