Nigerian officials have said that the extremist group Boko Haram has killed dozens of people in a recent attack in Borno state.
Witnesses told the AFP that in this latest attack, which occurred on Monday, militants overran the villages, then rounded up residents and slashed their throats.
"They fired several warning shots in the air before they began to tie the hands of adult males behind their back and slaughtered them while other residents watched in horror," one witness said.
Reuters reported that in neighboring Cameroon, a town was hit by two explosions on Thursday.
"The first was just after 9 o'clock (0800 GMT) in the market in Kerawa and the other around 200 metres (yards) from the (military) infantry camp. For the moment we don't have a death toll," a law enforcement official said.
Boko Haram is the same group that garnered international headlines in 2014 after hundreds of girls were kidnapped from a government secondary school in Borno state. The abductions sparked outrage and started the social media movement #BringBackOurGirls.
