Films from a variety of genres are hitting theaters this weekend. Dramas, thrillers and comedies hope to captivate audiences. Among them, a new film from Anne Hathaway where, as opposed to her role in Devil Wears Prada, this time she plays the boss.
A 70-year-old widow becomes an intern for an online fashion company in The Intern. Realizing that retirement isn’t for him, he jumps back into the job pool and tries his hand at something new. During the internship, he forms a bond with the company’s young founder. The PG-13 comedy stars Robert DeNiro, Anne Hathaway and Rene Russo. It plays for two hours and one minute.
Dracula and his monster friends are back for Hotel Transylvania 2. In this sequel to the hit 2012 film, Mavis and Jonathan have a young son. Afraid that his red-headed grandson is more human than vampire, Dracula tries to teach him how to be a monster. The PG animated comedy features the voices of Adam Sandler, Mel Brooks, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, Kevin James, Molly Shannon, Jon Lovitz, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Fran Drescher and Cee-Lo Green. It plays for one hour and twenty-nine minutes.
A family is evicted from their home in 99 Homes. A young man goes to great lengths to make ends meet and get his home back for his family. He gets a job as an evictor, working for the man who kicked him and his family out. The limited released suspense film starring Andrew Garfield, Laura Dern and Michael Shannon is based on a true story. The one hour and fifty-two minute thriller is rated R for language, sex and violence.
Set during the fight for gay rights in 1969, Stonewall, tells the story of a young man who is kicked out of his home and moves to New York City. Sick of being discriminated against and harassed for being gay, he and his friends take part in history-making riots. The drama unfolds in limited theaters in two hours and nine minutes. It’s rated R for sex, language, violence and drugs.
A man’s son vanishes during a Halloween celebration in Pay the Ghost. Desperately searching for his son, he finds a connection between his son and other children’s disappearances. Nicolas Cage stars in the unrated thriller. The limited released film is unrated.
A teenager in a new school is given an assignment to learn from a senior citizen in Ashby. As a result, he reaches out to his neighbor and discovers that he is an assassin. The two form a bond which transforms the teen, giving him much needed confidence. Mickey Rourke, Nat Wolff, Sarah Silverman and Emma Roberts star in the one hour and forty-three minute comedic drama. The limited released film is rated R for language, sex and violence.
Student activists go on a mission to stop the destruction of the Amazon in The Green Inferno. When their plane crash lands in the rainforest, they find themselves captive by a group of deadly natives. The thriller runs for one hour and forty-three minutes. It’s rated R for violence, nudity and sex.
Three women struggle to survive during the Civil War in The Keeping Room. When two soldiers come knocking at their door, the women realize that they may have to go to extreme measures to save themselves and their home. The limited released drama stars Hailee Steinfeld, Brit Marling, Muna Otaru and Sam Worthington. The one hour and thirty-five minute film is rated R for violence and sex.
A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story is a documentary of a 26-year-old woman who was bullied for her looks and decided to not let it get to her, but instead to fight back. Suffering from an undiagnosed syndrome that causes her to not gain weight, the 58-pound woman has become an inspiration for those who have been harassed by others and has become an outspoken advocate for a federal anti-bullying bill. The PG-13 film is playing in limited theaters for one hour and eighteen minutes.
With all of the drama, thriller and comedies this week, next week it’s time for a little adventure. Joseph Gordon-Levitt does death-defying stunt in The Walk. Plus, Matt Damon heads into space in The Martian.
