Hundreds of people joined Amber Rose at Pershing Square in downtown Los Angeles Saturday for her SlutWalk event.
Women dressed up in an array of attire including costumes and lingerie and carried signs that read strong statements such as “My Clothes are Not My Consent.”
According to the LA Times, the event was promoted as a way to express “outrage towards issues of sexual violence, gender inequality, derogatory labeling and victim blaming.”
SlutWalks originated in Toronto in 2011 in response to an incident where a police officer told a group of college students that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order to not be victimized.”
Rose, 31, is a stripper turned model who came to prominence after high profile relationships with Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa. E! Online reported that Rose carried a sign that read “Strippers Have Feelings Too.”
She’s also been involved in social media feuds with West’s wife Kim Kardashian and the rest of the Kardashian clan.
Rose’s mom also attended the event carrying a sign that read “F--K Yo 30 Showers” in response to a comment made by West back in February on the widely popular Power 105.1 radio show The Breakfast Club.
West had said that “it’s very hard for a woman to want to be with someone that was with Amber Rose….I had to take 30 showers before I got with Kim.”
Since her rise to fame Rose has been shamed for her past, motivating her to fight back against slut shaming. Her self-named non-profit organization hosted the event with the mission of “uplifting, empowering and enhancing the platform of women across the globe.”
