Baltimore parents Tom and Kristen Hewitt beat very long odds earlier this month when they welcomed a rare set of identical triplets into the world.
The special triplets, who were conceived without the use of fertility treatments, were born Oct. 6th at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center. The chances of giving birth to identical triplets range somewhere from one in 60,000 to one in 200 million births.
Mrs. Hewitt told ABC News that when they first got the ultrasound, the technician got very quiet and to break the silence her husband jokingly asked if "there was more than one baby in there." The technician then went on to tell the couple there was three buns in the oven.
Dr. Khouzami, who delivered the triplets, also said that the hospital delivers about 30-40 triplets a year but the Hewitt's were the first identical triplets ever to be delivered at the hospital.
Multiple births are riskier than single birth pregnancies but the three boys Thomas III, Finnegan and Oliver were all born healthy, in excellent condition and are at home with their parents. Mrs. Hewitt also made it through without complications.
The couple met when they were students at Ohio State University and will celebrate their four-year wedding anniversary in December.
