The box office slowed down a bit this weekend, even with a new big expensive epic from Hollywood hitting theaters. That epic was Pan, Warner Bros.’ $150 million Peter Pan prequel about the boy who never grew up. Audiences have grown up though and the film was a major disaster for the studio.

Ridley Scott’s The Martian from 20th Century Fox continued to ride the wave of good reviews with a second weekend at the top. According to early estimates at Rentrak, the Matt Damon-starring sci-fi adventure reeled in $37 million, bringing its domestic total to $108.7 million. It also continued to dominate overseas, so its international total is now up to $119 million.

Sony’s Hotel Transylvania 2 has continued to do well with families, taking in another $20.3 million in weekend No. 3. It’s up to $116.8 million domestically already.

Pan came in a very distant third with just $15.5 million. The Joe Wright-directed film was marketed as a visual marvel, but audiences didn’t really care. Its only big star was Hugh Jackman, who struggles to draw audiences outside of the X-Men movies or Les Miserables. Box Office Mojo notes that the movie did earn a decent B+ CinemaScore grade from audiences who actually saw it, but that might not be enough to keep the film in theaters long.

If Warner Bros. was hoping that overseas audiences might be interested, there’s bad news. Pan only grossed $20.5 million outside of the U.S. and Canada.

Warner Bros.’ The Intern with Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro came in fourth with $6.8 million, so its domestic total is now $49.6 million. Lionsgate’s Sicario with Emily Blunt fell to fifth with $7.3 million.

The other big story of the weekend was the success of Universal’s Steve Jobs in limited release. It earned $521,000 from four theaters in New York and Los Angeles. The film goes wide on Oct. 23.
