Carrie Underwood is reflecting on the reality show that made her famous.

In a new interview with Parade, the ‘Smoke Break’ singer talks about leaving home for the first time to compete in the fourth season of American Idol.

Idol was probably the most horrifying thing, because I had never been away from my hometown like that before,” Underwood said. “I was in L.A., of all places, by myself, putting myself out there, which is a scary thing for anybody to do. My first plane ride was when I was going out to L.A. alone.”

Underwood also said she worried about her career post Idol. The singer revealed that she made sure to think positive thoughts so that if she didn't make it, then she knew that "I got to do the coolest thing ever." Once she actually won the competition, she made sure to think practically about what would happen if anything else did go wrong.

"I was like, OK, I will just have fun with this and save up as much money as I can and finish school and get a real job,” Underwood said.

Underwood released her latest album, Storyteller, Oct. 23. She is set to perform at the American Music Awards in November.
