Demi Lovato is opening up about her father’s 2013 death, admitting she had mixed emotions about it due to their tumultuous relationship.

She wrote a song about it, which is called “Father” and on her new album Confident, which she opened up about in a video series explaining the album.

"I was very conflicted when he passed because he was abusive," she said, People reports. "He was mean, but he wanted to be a good person, and he wanted to have his family."

"When my mom married my stepdad, he still had this huge heart where he would say, 'I'm so glad Eddie's taking care of you and doing the job that I wish I could do.'"

Lovato has opened up in the past about her father’s mental health, revealing he suffered from bipolar disorder. She is also bipolar, so it’s something she can relate to.

“He knew he wasn't capable of raising a family, and it was because of his mental illness," she continued. "To know that it wasn't fully his fault really was saddening to me. I wanted to write about it. I wanted to process it."
