Duncan Jones, the director of Moon and Source Code, is going to direct Warcraft, a film based on the extremely popular video game series.
The news was first confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, noting that the film will by produced by Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni of Legendary Pictures. Blizzard Entertainment developed the game and Charles Roven and Alex Gartner of the company will co-produce the film.
Legendary, which is based at Warner Bros., hasn’t released any information on the plot, but said that Charles Leavitt is writing the script. The studio hopes to get production started later this year and have the film in theaters in 2015.
It is expected that Jones will get a $100 million budget to work with, which is far more than his previous films. The Jake Gyllenhaal-starring Source Code was made for $35 million and Jones’ breakthrough sci-film Moon had just a $1 million budget. That film starred Sam Rockwell and was made in 2009.
HitFix notes that the Warcraft franchise began in 1994 with Warcraft: Orcs & Humans. That spawned two sequels in 1996 and 2002, as well as the immensely successful World of Warcraft in 2004. That game is still one of the most popular “massively multiplayer online role-playing” games and has 10 million subscribers.
