Almost 50 years after its original release, fans of Night of the Living Dead are about to see nearly 10 minutes of new material from the film.
According to Bloody Disgusting, director George Romero has recovered nine minutes of lost footage from his original classic, Night of the Living Dead. Romero made the comments during Monster Mania in Maryland, according to a Blu-ray.com forum post.
The new scene comes from a 16mm work print of the film Romero recently dug up. It's said to take place in the basement, and it includes the largest zombie sequence in the entire movie.
The new footage is not available to watch yet, but Martin Scorsese is apparently working on a restoration from the original negatives. It's not clear in what form fans might be able to see it, but it would make sense to throw the scene in on some sort of home release of the movie. Perhaps it could be included on a 50th anniversary package?
Night of the Living Dead was released in 1968, and it's considered to be the first major zombie movie ever made. At least, it's the first to depict zombies in the way we know them today. Since then, Romero has released five additional zombie films, with his most recent being Survival of the Dead in 2009. At the time, Romero said he planned to direct two more films in the series, notes ShockTillYouDrop.com.
