The gunman who fatally shot nine people and injured several others at a community college in Roseburg, Oregon has been identified.

The Associated Press noted that authorities identified the gunman as 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer. He exchanged gunfire with police and was fatally shot on the Umpqua Community College campus.

As we previously reported, law enforcement officials responded to reports of an active shooter at the community college just before 10:40 a.m. local time Thursday. Nine people were killed and several more were injured.

There are still so many questions to be answered and now with Mercer’s identity revealed investigators are turning their attention to a motive for why he committed the massacre. Police are looking into his social media use and tracking everything he did online to offer clues.

Mercer lived in an apartment complex not far from the college and neighbors described him as “unfriendly” and a loner.

Umpqua Community College has more than 3,000 students enrolled in the school.
