Instagram CEO, Kevin Systrom, has admitted the real reason they delete posts with female nipples showing, which started the #FreeTheNipple movement.
Business Insider reports one of the main reasons they won’t allow photos of nipples to stay up is to appease Apple, due to the App Store guidelines. If Instagram doesn’t abide by their rules, they risk having their app removed from the store.
The Apple store prohibits nudity unless the app is rated rated 17+ and if Instagram had that rating they would be eliminating an entire demographic of younger users.
Systrom did say Instagram is "committed to artistic freedom,” but in order to play by Apple’s rules they had to make some “tough calls."
Celebrities involved in the FreeTheNipple movement, which points out the double standard in censoring nipples when it comes to males and females, are Naomi Campbell, Chrissy Teigen, Miley Cyrus, Lena Dunham and many more.
