Actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi were released from a Vermont jail on Thursday after a judge decided to dismiss the charges against the couple.
The Independence Day star and his wife were wanted in California on vandalism charges for allegedly squatting in a guesthouse at their previous home. As USA Today noted, they were each being held on $500,000 bond, before Judge Alison Arms dismissed charges that they were fugitives in Vermont from California.
Of her decision Judge Arms said that there was “no legal basis” for the pair to remain in custody.
As we previously reported, they were picked up last Friday sneaking over the Canadian border into Vermont.
Upon leaving court, the Quaids told reporters that they will address the charges in California at some point and will remain in Vermont to care for Evi’s sick father.
The 65-year-old Quaid who had roles in several films including Kingpin and the Vacation movies said that he would like to become a volunteer firefighter in the Vermont town of Lincoln.
