Lupita Nyong’o will be starring on Broadway in Eclipsed, a play she is currently starring on Off Broadway for the Public Theater. It was written by Danai Gurira, a star on AMC’s The Walking Dead.
Eclipsed is a very serious dramatic play about women detained and raped by a Liberian rebel officer. Despite the heavy subject matter, it has been a financial success and all tickets are currently sold out, reports The New York Times.
The times notes that it is one of only two announced plays written by a woman to reach Broadway this upcoming season. Hene Edmundson’s Therese Raquin will also be produced on Broadway.
The play is also an important one for Nyong’o. According to Variety, the actress was an understudy for a 2009 Yale production and has hoped to play in it again since then. Now that she has an Academy Award on her resume thanks to her work in 12 Years A Slave, she had the clout to star in it.
Eclipsed’s Public Theater run finishes on Nov. 29. It will start previews on Feb. 23 at the Golden Theater and will officially open on March 6.
Nyong’o can be seen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Dec. 18.
