A new ABC News/Washington Post poll reveals President Obama has reached a 51 percent job approval rating, his highest approval rating in over two years.
According to ABC, Obama's approval rating has jumped six percentage points since July and is up 11 points from his all time low. He hasn't seen a 51 percent approval rating since May 2013, a likely result of the improving economic times.
In comparison, Republicans in Congress are seeing a high disapproval rating of 71 percent, a concerning sign for conservatives heading into the upcoming elections. ABC also reported that Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike see signs of dysfunction in the Republican party including the struggle to elect a new House speaker.
The president's disapproval rating, on the other hand, declined from 50 percent in July to 45 percent today.
The Washington Post also noted the strong shift in ratings since the 2014 midterm elections when Obama reached his all time low 40 percent approval rating. The strong disapproval outpaced strong approval by a 2-to-1 margin. Now, however, strong opinions are closely divided with 35 percent strongly disapproving and 28 percent strongly approving.
The positive shifts in Obama's ratings follow a string of wins for democrats in congress including the legalization of same-sex marriage and the supreme court's ruling confirming the legality of the Affordable Health Care Act. Unemployment rates are also continuing to decline and gas prices remain fairly low.
With momentum in the favor of democrats, which candidate Republicans elect in the upcoming primaries will become increasingly important for their chances next November.
