Everyone knows about Scientology and how obscure it can be, but they may have crossed new boundaries this time. Director Alex Gibney’s documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief got a lot of attention when it was released last March. Now Scientology will respond in a way only Scientology could.
The Hollywood Reporter stated that the church has begun making its own film about Gibney and has reached out to several of his peers in connection with a planned profile in a Scientology magazine.
The film won three Emmys this past September and since then, members of the church of Scientology have reached out to people who have worked with Gibney. Oscar Nominee Rory Kennedy has been contacted, along with her husband, Mark Bailey, by a man by the name of Joe Taglieri.
Officials from the church spoke out regarding their views towards Gibney over recent events, saying, “What is clear to us in all of this is that Alex Gibney can dish it out, but can’t take it. He’s exceptionally thin-skinned to the point where he tried to censor and shame anyone criticizing him at public events. One would think a documentarian would be more tolerant and open minded,” Cinema Blend reported.
Scientology certainly has the means to make this documentary, but only time will tell if it will actually happen.
