Snapchat has reportedly shut down its Snap Channel, which was supposed to be its first attempt at original content. The social networking app, which focuses on sharing photos and short videos among friends, has also let go of the employees working on the effort, including Marcus Wiley, head of program planning and development.
Deadline reports that Snapchat had already removed Snap Channel a few weeks ago and said it was going to be relaunched. But they later reconsidered the idea and decided not to move forward at all.
“Given that we are winding down the Snap Channel, it’s natural that Marcus would want to explore other opportunities,” the company told Deadline. “He is a tremendous talent, and we wish him well.”
From now on, Snapchat’s original content will be created by Discover content partners like ESPN, CNN, National Geographic, Comedy Central and Yahoo.
Snapchat isn’t the only social network that’s had to layoff employees this week. Twitter laid off 336 people, or 8 percent of its workforce.
