Star Wars: The Force Awakens is already breaking records, even though it doesn’t hit theaters for two months. The film broke Fandango’s first-day presale record.
Tickets for the film went on sale about two hours before the final trailer was shown during last night’s Monday Night Football, leading to Fandango going down briefly as everyone rushed to get their tickets at once. The movie ticketing site said that the traffic did result in a record-setting night.
Fandango said that its traffic jumped to seven times the typical peak levels and they sold eight times as many tickets as they did when tickets went on sale for the previous record holder. That movie was The Hunger Games, which went on sale on Feb. 22, 2012.
“Movie theaters are continually adding new show times on Fandango to meet the phenomenal demand. The enthusiasm for this year’s most anticipated movie is out of this world and we expect it to continue all the way to its debut on December 18,” Fandango said Tuesday.
