In an interview with Good Morning America for his new book, Travis Barker opened up about the plane crash that almost took his life, telling them that his children were the reasons he was able to keep living.

People reported that when describing the crash that occurred in 2008, Barker said he was “soaked in jet fuel. And then we realize- you know, we’re out of the plane- and then the plane explodes.”

Barker and the late DJ AM were the sole survivors among the plane, which took the lives of four people. DJ AM passed away just a month before the first anniversary of an accidental overdose.

Barker had 27 surgeries in order to repair the damage done to his body due to the crash. He also admitted he had contemplated suicide in his upcoming book Can I Say: Living Large, Cheating Death, and Drums, Drums Drums.

He also talked about his children, Landon and Alabama, and how they were the reason he was able to deal with the pain. Barker said, “It was just hard for them to see me in the state I was in.” The drummer said that while in his class coloring, Landon was “drawing a picture of a plane crashing.”

After battling his own addiction to drugs, Barker has continued to make music, but still won’t fly in a plane. He has told his kids that he’ll be ready when they are.

His memoir is in stores now.
