Hundreds of Berkeley High School students walked out of class Thursday in protest of racist and threatening messages posted on a school computer Wednesday.
According to NBC Bay Area, the march consisted of approximately 700 people, including students, as they walked through Civic Center Park to Berkeley City Hall chanting "Black Lives Matter" and "raise a fist if you're not gonna take this." A student posted a screenshot of the racist messages which included messages that read "KKK Forever Public Lynching December 9th 2015" and "I hung a n----- by his neck in my backyard."
Local Berkeley police described the protest as "peaceful and friendly."
The Daily Californian reported that Berkeley High School Principle Sam Pasarow emailed students and parents Wednesday night that the administration was investigating but marchers were disappointed with the administration's response and the lack of details that were shared with them.
UCPD Operations Division Captain Alex Yao also described the scene stating "the atmosphere seems enthusiastic" and ensured UCPD will remain at the scene to ensure people's rights are protected.
The march symbolically ended at Sproul Plaza on the UC Berkeley campus, which has a long history of student demonstrations dating back to the Free Speech Movements protests of 1964.
