Gunnar Hansen, who portrayed Leatherface in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, has died at the age of 68.

BBC News reported his agent confirmed he passed away Saturday after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Hansen starred in the 1974 film, which told the story of five friends who were visiting one of the character’s grandfather at his country house when they are hunted down by the killer.

His agent, Mike Eisenstadt, said he portrayed “one of the most iconic evil figures in the history of cinema.”

The film spawned six sequels and the most recent was the 2013 Texas Chainsaw 3D.

Hansen was born in Iceland and moved to the United States, where he pursued studies in both English and Scandanavian Studies. He wrote a book that focused on the behind-the-scenes making of the film he was most famous for called Chain Saw Confidential in 2013.

The Guardian reported he was in the midst of work for a new film, Death House, which is due to be released next year.

Hansen is survived by Betty Tower, his partner of 13 years.
