While filmmaker Todd Haynes took an extended break before making Carol, he isn’t waiting to get his next project moving. He’s even cast Julianne Moore to star in the film, titled Wonderstruck.
The casting was first reported by Deadline. The film will be based on Brian Selznick’s children’s novel and centers on two deaf children from different eras. Ben lives in 1977 Minnesota and runs off to New York after his mother’s death. Rose is stuck in a house in 1927 New Jersey and also runs off to New York. They are linked by a mystery.
Wonderstruck will be produced by Haynes’ frequent collaborator Christine Vachon, along with Pam Koffler and John Sloss. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Killer Films, which was involved with Carol, will also work on Wonderstruck.
Haynes and Moore have worked together twice before. Moore starred in Haynes’ second feature film, Safe. They worked together again on the 2003 film Far From Heaven, which earned Moore an Oscar nomination.
Haynes is gearing up for awards season, as Carol is expected to be in the running for Oscars. The film opens in limited release on Nov. 20 and stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.
Moore, who finally won an Oscar for Still Alice, is back in theaters this weekend with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2. She also stars in Freeheld with Ellen Page.
