Since Universal knows a cash cow when it sees one, the studio is preparing to make a whole new Jurassic Park trilogy, using this year’s Jurassic World a launch pad. While we have heard Colin Trevorrow mention a trilogy before, the studio confirmed it this week.

During a roundtable with other studio chiefs for The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley said that she believes Jurassic World 2 will hit theaters on time and that Trevorrow is working on the outline with Steven Spielberg. She confirmed that they are thinking of these movies as a trilogy.

“There's no reason why we should [have trouble]. [Director] Colin Trevorrow is busy working on an outline,” Langley said. “He's been working with Steven [Spielberg]. And they have an idea for the next two movies actually. It was designed as a trilogy, unbeknown to us. It's a happy surprise.”

Back in September, Trevorrow told Flickering Myth that he envisioned World as the start of a new trilogy from the very beginning.

“We designed the whole thing that way. And, honestly, the whole trilogy is articulated in Jurassic Park,” Trevorrow told the side. “Jurassic World is all based on Ian Malcolm’s quote: ‘You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could and before you knew what you had, you’d packaged it and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox and now you want to sell it.’ That, to me, is Jurassic World.”

Universal announced in July that Jurassic World 2 - technically the fifth Jurassic Park movie - will hit theaters on June 22, 2018. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will both return, but Trevorrow won’t be able to direct it because he’s working on Star Wars: Episode IX and The Book of Henry.
